Starting next year, Boston's transit system will run until last call -- at least on weekends.
The MBTA will stay open until 2:30 am on Friday and Saturday. It's part of a one-year pilot program that will start sometime in the spring of 2014.
Currently, the system shuts down at 1am.

And beginning this weekend, Maryland's commuter rail will run between Baltimore and D.C. on weekends.
It's a nod to both an increase in transit ridership -- and a shift in ridership patterns. Nationally, transit ridership is up (New York City recently broke a one-day subway record). Earlier this year, the American Public Transportation Association said the economic recovery -- bringing with it additional jobs -- was partially the reason. And many new jobs aren't the traditional nine-to-five flavor. The Boston Globesays "techies in the growing innovation economy have complained about how Boston shuts down too early."
